What is the current ocean freight cost from China to Europe?

Rates change frequently based on market conditions. Use 7ConBooking to get the current all-in rate for your specific origin and destination ports.

Why have China to Europe freight rates been so volatile?

The combination of pandemic-era supply chain disruptions, post-pandemic demand normalisation, Suez Canal routing changes, carrier alliance restructuring, and fuel price volatility has created significant rate volatility since 2020.

How far in advance should I book China to Europe sea freight?

During normal market conditions, booking 4 to 6 weeks in advance is standard. During peak periods such as pre-Chinese New Year or pre-holiday Q4, 6 to 8 weeks advance booking is recommended to secure space at competitive rates.

What is the impact of the Suez Canal on China to Europe rates?

When carriers reroute via the Cape of Good Hope, effective trade lane capacity is reduced because each voyage takes 10 to 14 days longer. This reduces the number of round trips per year per vessel and puts upward pressure on rates.

Are rates lower via the Belt and Road rail alternative?

China-Europe rail services offer faster transit than sea freight (approximately 15 to 20 days) at a cost between sea and air freight. Rail capacity is more limited than sea freight and not available for all cargo types.

What is a GRI (General Rate Increase) and how does it affect my booking?

A GRI is a scheduled rate increase announced by carriers, typically with 30 days notice. Bookings confirmed before a GRI effective date are typically held at the pre-GRI rate. Monitoring carrier GRI announcements and booking ahead of increases can reduce cost.

Can I get a long-term rate agreement for China to Europe bookings?

Long-term rate agreements (annual or multi-year contracts) are typically available for shippers with significant volume commitments. Contact 7ConBooking to discuss options for regular high-volume shippers.
